BLUSH is a collective of eight local artists - Walter Redinger, Beverly McNaughton, Aidan Urquhart, Wanda Sawicki, Bob Bozak, Wendi Waters, Kevin Curtis-Norcross and Brian Lambert - whose exhibition will open at London’s Arts Project on April 1st, 2005. By initiating this exhibition, the BLUSH collective seeks to establish itself as a continuing visual presence within the community and thus reinforce its commitment to reestablishing the vitality of London’s city center. The collective believes that the cultural sector can make an integral contribution to the revitalization of this city’s downtown; and, certainly, the exhibition’s erotica theme will attract a large viewing audience to its Dundas Street venue. Erotica was chosen as the exhibition’s unifying focus because of its presence and intrenchment within the cultural landscape. While expressions of the erotic from high culture to low, are often censored, dismissed or reviled, its presence continues to prevail. Indeed, humanity has never lacked for images of sexuality, and, as BLUSH testifies, it has never stopped attempting to redefine the language of its desires and thus to better conceptualize and communicate sexuality; our own, that of others; personally, culturally, historically. The BLUSH artists work in a wide range of mediums and utilize diverse approaches to art-practice and are committed to presenting London with a fresh and challenging view of a fundamental and contentious cultural category. The Arts Project at 203 Dundas Street is a venue that draws large audiences to its diverse musical, theatrical and fine-arts programs, and will host the BLUSH exhibition for three weeks, beginning March 29, 2005.
