IN (LIKE THEM) The Mitchell Algus Gallery (511 West 25th Street, 2nd floor, 212-242-6242) has done it again: brought to the fore a major under-recognized artist from the past, Walter Redinger, and teamed his work, old and new, with that of emerging artist Banks Violette, for a magically morose combination. Violette, whose solo show opens at the Whitney Museum May 27, is one of the standout younger artists from P.S.1’s “Greater New York 2005.” Redinger, whose fiberglass sculptures from the ‘60s blend biomorphic forms with pop and minimalism, presents a monumental group of recent sculptures called The God Seekers - totem figures watching over a sarcophagus that looks like a missile in meltdown or the ruins of a dragon’s penis.
